As part of the technical assistance and capacity-building component of the Women’s fund for climate resilient agriculture program, special emphasis is being placed on the promotion of agroforestry practices. Pigeon peas are sown by farmers to improve the fertility of soils in preparation of the next production season. The roots of Pigeon pea form nodules that host nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobia). This nitrogen fixation helps to fertilize impoverished soils and reduce the need for nitrogen fertilisers. The leaves and stems once incorporated in the soil become organic matter and increase the water retention capacity of soil
